Weights and making charges are typical examples. Real pieces vary a lot by design and shop.

Before you go to the shop

Estimate your jewellery bill

Enter the weight and the making charge the jeweller quotes. The estimate uses today's rate and adds GST the way a jewellery bill does.

How today's rate is made

Indian gold follows the world price, converted to rupees, plus import duty and a small local premium.

  1. World gold price—Per troy ounce (31.10 g), traded in US dollars
  2. Dollar to rupee—Today's exchange rate
  3. Pure gold in rupees—Per gram, before Indian taxes
  4. Import duty 15%—10% basic customs duty + 5% agri cess, since 13 May 2026
  5. Local market premium 1.5%—Bank and dealer margins in the Indian bullion market
  6. 24K rate per gram—22K is this × 22/24, 18K is this × 18/24. GST of 3% is added on the bill.

Read the hallmark before you pay

Since 2021 most gold jewellery sold in India must carry a BIS hallmark. It has three parts, laser-marked on the piece, usually near the clasp or inside a ring.

  1. Find all three marksA piece with only "916" stamped and no HUID is not BIS hallmarked under the current rules.
  2. Verify the HUIDOpen the free BIS CARE app, choose "Verify HUID" and type the code. It shows the purity, item type and the jeweller who registered it.
  3. Match it to your billThe bill should list the HUID, net gold weight, purity, rate per gram, making charge and GST as separate lines.

Six things that change what you pay

Making charge is the big variable

The gold rate is nearly the same at every shop. Making charges are not. They often run from about 8% for plain chains to 25% or more for detailed work. Ask for it in writing.

Pay gold rate for gold only

Stones, beads and lac should be weighed separately. If the gross weight is billed at gold rate, you pay gold prices for glass.

Board rates exclude GST

The rate on the shop board is usually before GST. Your bill adds 3% on the total, including the making charge.

Ask about buyback before buying

When you sell or exchange later, many shops deduct a few percent and the full making charge. Ask what their exchange deduction is.

Coins for saving, jewellery for wearing

24K coins and bars carry low making charges, so more of your money stays in gold. Jewellery costs more to make and gets less back on resale.

Festival days are busier, not cheaper

Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya bring offers on making charges, but the gold rate itself follows the world market. Compare the making charge, not the banner.
